Whether hammering technical World Cup courses or local cross-country trails, these competitive riders want their bikes to be super lightweight, efficient and ultimately fast, for explosive climbing and nimble handling. Though the Epic is an ideal bike for racers, it’s also appealing for riders who want a short-travel bike that shreds rugged singletrack.
WHAT:
Externally tuneable, trail-sensing rear shock, pioneered by Specialized and manufactured by Fox. New shock tune, and new easy-to-use Brain Fade dial
WHY:
Maximizes efficiency and control over smooth and rough terrain.
HOW:
When a rider encounters bump forces, the Mini Brain’s inertia valve disengages, allowing oil to flow and the shock to immediately transition from firm (efficient) to fully active (compliant) suspension settings. The external Brain Fade dial allows riders to fine tune their suspension levels.
WHAT:
Fast-handling frame geometry formulated for the Competitive XC experience.
WHY:
Creates an aggressive (or more forward) riding position for precision handling on cross-country trails and courses.
HOW:
By using a short rear end, low bottom bracket, and roomy top tube, riders get a more nimble, manoeuvrable bike with room to stretch out and stay centred over the bike. For riders not focused on racing, the head tube angle is still slack enough to enjoy plenty of winding singletrack.
WHAT:
Integrated frame/rear hub design that goes beyond standard 135 or 142mm rear ends.
WHY:
Creates a stiffer wheel and more stable system. Also makes it easier to take the wheel in and out.
HOW:
Since we design and engineer our bikes and components to work together, we were able to move the entyre cassette mechanism on our Roval wheel 2mm out from the standard size hub, then adjust the frame width accordingly. This new, integrated design widens spoke stance for more stiffness and stability. The X-12 threaded axle, unlike a standard QR, allows the wheel to be taken in and out of the frame easily thanks to wheel guides on the dropouts.
WHAT:
XC-specific double cranks spec’d on all Epic models.
WHY:
It’s everything you need and nothing you don’t! Double cranks are lighter, better shifting, and provide more useable/less redundant gears, better ground clearance, and less chain drop.
HOW:
Knowing what is appropriate for XC riders and keeping in touch with trends allows us to build a better riding experience and create more demand for our bikes.
